What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening uses prescription-strength bleaching agents — far more concentrated than anything available at a drugstore — to break down stains embedded in your tooth enamel. At Bethesda Center for Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer in-office whitening for fast, dramatic results.
In-office whitening is performed right here in our practice and typically takes about an hour. We apply a professional-grade whitening gel to your teeth, which is then activated with a specialized light. Most patients leave with teeth that are several shades brighter than when they arrived.
Why Is Professional Whitening Better Than Store-Bought Options?
Walk down any drugstore aisle and you'll find strips, trays, pens, and toothpastes all claiming to whiten your smile. While these products can produce mild improvements, they simply can't match the effectiveness of professional treatment. The whitening agents used in our office are significantly stronger, and our custom trays ensure even, consistent coverage that ill-fitting over-the-counter trays can't replicate.
More importantly, professional whitening is performed under dental supervision. This means we evaluate your enamel health before treatment, protect your gums from irritation, and recommend the appropriate strength based on your sensitivity levels and goals. The result is a faster, more effective, and better-managed whitening experience from start to finish.
Teeth Whitening Bleach
Our teeth bleaching gel has the highest concentration of bleaching agents possible for almost immediate results. We create custom bleaching splints or trays from impressions of your teeth to ensure a precise fit that protects your gums while allowing the whitening gel to fully contact every tooth.
Wear our teeth-whitening splints for just a few hours a day to see quick results. Our special bleaching agent bubbles away the stains in your tooth enamel without damaging the underlying dentin. It does not damage existing dental work or cause any discomfort. After just a few days, you will see a brighter, cleaner-looking smile. You can continue using the trays and bleaching agent until you achieve the desired effect, usually after a few weeks of wearing the splints for 3-4 hours a day. Once you have reached the level of whiteness you want, you stop using the splints except for occasional touch-ups.
Teeth whitening gels and trays are appropriate for most kinds of discoloration, including food and beverage stains, smoking, aging, and chemical damage to teeth. If your discoloration is severe, you may want to consider crowns or veneers. Still, teeth whitening provides stellar results for most patients at a very reasonable cost.
If you want immediate results, we also offer Zoom! teeth whitening. This is done in our office and requires an hour in the dentist’s chair. The results are immediate because special lights activate and intensify the hydrogen peroxide in the whitening gel.
Advantages of Our Teeth Whitening Trays or Splints
Whitens yellow, brown, and spotted tooth staining
It is easy to use at home without anyone noticing
Non-invasive and effective
No risk of irritation often found with over-the-counter bleaching agents
An inexpensive option that gives results in just a few weeks
Who Can Get Teeth Whitening?
Anyone with healthy teeth and gums can have their teeth whitened using our system, but we recommend using it only on adults. The results tend to be more effective the younger you are. Many of our patients whiten their teeth in their twenties and thirties, but we also have patients in their eighties who use our teeth whitening trays. Whitening now will give you better results than waiting until the stains are more difficult to remove.
Where to Get Teeth Whitening
Our office can create custom teeth splints right here. When you pick them up, you also receive the whitening gel and detailed instructions for safe and effective results. Once we take impressions of your teeth, making the trays takes just a few days.
How is Teeth Whitening Done?
An impression is taken to make a specialized “mouth guard” or “stent” to hold the bleach against the teeth. The material is used each night for about 3-4 hours for a week or two, and at the end of this time, significant whitening will occur. In some cases, the change is nothing short of brilliant. For confidence in appearance, bleaching technology allows us to promise improvements in yellowing, aging, or stained teeth. For very severely stained teeth, crowns or dental veneers may be more appropriate.
Key Benefits of Teeth Whitening
- Corrects brown, yellow, and spotted tooth staining
- Works on people of any age
- Near-permanent solution for a “dull” smile, restoring brightness and bringing a smile alive
After your teeth whitening treatment, you can expect a noticeable improvement in your tooth shade. Some minor sensitivity may occur, but this is usually temporary and should subside within a few hours to a day. It’s important to follow Dr. Greenbaum's aftercare guidelines to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.
Aftercare tips:
Avoid foods and drinks that stain your teeth (coffee, tea, wine) for the first 48 hours after treatment.
Practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.
Touch up as needed by using your trays periodically to maintain your bright, beautiful smile.
Considerations for Teeth Whitening
Over-the-counter bleaching agents are available for purchase at drug stores and pharmacies. However, since these products can harm the gums and teeth, it’s better to use products our practice recommends. Professional-grade whitening ensures safety and effectiveness, while at-home options are customized to your specific needs. When using over-the-counter products, you may not get the full effect of the whitening agent, and there's a higher risk of uneven results and sensitivity.
Why Choose Professional Teeth Whitening?
While many people turn to over-the-counter teeth whitening products, professional treatments offer a variety of benefits that cannot be matched. For starters, the whitening agents we use are stronger, safer, and more effective than those found in drugstore products. In addition, the custom trays we provide ensure a better fit, so you can achieve a more even, natural-looking result.
Unlike over-the-counter treatments, which can be uncomfortable and difficult to use, professional whitening options are easy to apply, provide more predictable results, and are designed to minimize irritation to the gums and teeth. Dr. Greenbaum’s expertise ensures your whitening treatment is both safe and effective, delivering the best possible results.

Long-Term Benefits of Teeth Whitening
In addition to enhancing your smile’s appearance, teeth whitening can boost your confidence and improve your overall sense of well-being. A brighter smile can have a lasting impact on your social and professional life, helping you feel more comfortable and self-assured in all situations.
Whiter teeth also create a youthful, vibrant appearance that can take years off your face. Many patients report feeling better about their appearance after teeth whitening treatments, as it’s one of the simplest ways to rejuvenate their look. Whether you're preparing for a special occasion or simply looking to refresh your smile, teeth whitening can be an excellent way to give yourself a boost.
