TMJ Treatment Options
Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ disorder, can cause chronic headaches, intense facial pain, earaches, a stiff neck, soreness in the jaw, and more. TMJ disorders develop for many reasons. Whatever the cause, the results may include a misaligned bite, pain, clicking, or grating noise when you open your mouth, or trouble opening your mouth wide. No one treatment can resolve TMJ disorders completely and treatment takes time to become effective. Dr. Greenbaum can help you have a healthier, more comfortable jaw. One course of treatment is being fitted with a nightguard to prevent clenching or grinding your teeth and reduces muscle tension at night. An anterior positioning appliance moves your jaw forward, relieves pressure on parts of your jaw, and aids in disk repositioning. An orthotic stabilization appliance is worn 24 hours/day, or just at night, to move your jaw into the proper position. Utilizing appliances as part of TMJ treatment can help protect the teeth from wearing down.
Stress management techniques such as biofeedback or physical therapy may also be recommended in addition to being fitted with an appliance to help your overall TMJ treatment. Botox or Dysport can be injected into certain jaw and facial muscles to provide relief from intense TMJ pain. While injections are not a permanent solution to TMJ, injections can help with pain management and accompany other TMJ treatments.
In addition to being fitted with the right appliance and receiving Botox/Dysport injections, there are holistic treatments that can accompany any TMJ treatment:
- Resting your jaw
- Keeping your teeth apart when you are not swallowing or eating
- Eating soft foods
- Applying ice and heat
- Exercising your jaw
- Practicing good posture
While there isn’t one fix for TMJ, there are various treatment options to relieve your pain and help you get your smile back. Dr. Greenbaum will work closely with you to find the best treatments for your personal needs. To take the first step in your TMJ pain relief, give Dr. Greenbaum a call and set up a consultation!
