TMJ Therapy & Headache Relief

If you suffer from headaches, migraines, jaw pain, popping or clicking jaw joints, chronic earaches, or face and neck pain, your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) may be misaligned. The TMJ joints connect your jaw to your skull and allow it to move, open, and close. Nerves and muscles around your TMJ joints can become irritated if the joints are not in proper alignment. This causes the symptoms listed above, as well as teeth grinding (bruxism), which contributes to tooth wear and breakage.

TMJ Pain

As a student of continuing education, Dr. Greenbaum has studied the TMJ joints and their association to the total oral system. To treat TMJ dysfunction, Dr. Greenbaum uses a TENS unit to relax jaw muscles so that they allow the TMJ joints to move into a relaxed, natural position. Then, with K7 technology, Dr. Greenbaum will record this optimal position. An oral appliance can be fabricated to hold the jaw in proper alignment.

What is a TENS and a K-7?
The first step in diagnosing TMJ disorder involves a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) unit. The TENS sends mild electrical impulses to the muscles responsible for jaw movement. This relaxes the jaw and allows Dr. Greenbaum to record the jaw's proper alignment with our K-7 machine. The K-7 creates digital models and measures muscle activity. With the TENS and K-7, Dr. Greenbaum collects the information he needs for a thorough diagnosis. Learn more.

Oral Appliance Therapy
In some patients, the oral appliance reprograms muscles to retain the correct jaw position. Other patients wear their appliance long term. Conservative TMJ therapy based on the principals of neuromuscular dentistry and whole-mouth harmony has helped countless patients overcome the nagging, sometimes debilitating, symptoms (which can include migraines and headaches) of TMJ dysfunction.
