CPAP Intolerance
A machine using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is often prescribed for patients with sleep apnea. The apparatus consists of a facemask, headgear to hold the mask in place, and flexible hose running to the machine. The CPAP is an effective way to keep your airway open during sleep, but only if you are able to wear it and sleep comfortably. After attempting this form of treatment, many patients find that they are CPAP intolerant. Intolerance could occur for any number of reasons, including the bulk or noise of the machine. If you are CPAP intolerant, don’t leave your sleep apnea untreated. Visit Dr. Greenbaum to discuss being fitted for an oral appliance.
Do you feel tired all day? Do you have trouble concentrating? Are you irritable? Does your sleeping partner complain that you snore? These symptoms could indicate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
What is sleep apnea?
An apnea refers to a period in which the soft tissues at the back of the mouth collapse while you sleep. When airflow becomes obstructed like this, breathing stops, often for ten seconds or longer. A person with sleep apnea may experience these apneas hundreds of times throughout the night, resulting in oxygen depletion to the brain. Most people who have sleep apnea are unaware of a problem other than snoring.
How is sleep apnea screened?
To aid in your diagnosis, Dr. Greenbaum employs a sleep monitoring system for home use. You’ll sleep in the comfort of your own bed while a portable device collects data about your breathing, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and more. What are my treatment options?
Oral appliance therapy is highly effective in treating snoring. Research studies on OSA have shown that for mild apnea, the mandibular advancement devices reduce the apnea level to normal for many patients. Mandibular advancement appliances are also very successful in treating patients who have moderate OSA. The patients with severe OSA may or may not be good candidates for an oral appliance. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Greenbaum if you would like to find out for sure whether an MAS device is right for you.
Is it comfortable and effective?
The SomnoMed sleep appliance is made from thin, flexible material that forms to the contours of your mouth. Dr. Greenbaum will custom-design the appliance, which will ensure a comfortable fit.
Can children have sleep apnea?
Many people assume that sleep apnea is exclusively an adult condition. But sleep breathing disorders aren’t limited by age boundaries, and otherwise healthy children may be affected by sleep apnea. In fact, sleep apnea could contribute to behavior and attention problems in children. Proper evaluation and testing can identify and diagnose any sleep disorders that may be affecting your child. Childhood sleep disorders include sleep apnea, snoring, and insomnia, as well as TMJ issues and bruxism in children.
